Eshu Bumpus (Vocalist) sang before
he learned to speak. He is a storyteller, jazz vocalist, artist and educator
who travels throughout the US performing in schools and conducting workshops
in storytelling and creative writing. As a jazz vocalist, Eshu has performed
with great musicians such as Archie Shepp, Vishnu Wood, and Billy Arnold.
Paul Arslanian (Keyboard and percussion) is Music Director and Lecturer
for the Dance Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
and works as a jazz pianist, dance accompanist, and composer. Paul tours
the US and Europe with many jazz and dance groups, including the Archie
Shepp quartet, the Jazz Tap Ensemble, and the Boston Dance Umbrella’s
“Fascinating Rhythms Tour,”. Paul’s jazz compositions
can be heard on his own CDs and those of other recording artists, including
George Coleman, Roy Hargrove, John Hicks, and Bertha Hope.
Bob Weiner (Drums and percussion) has played and performed with Harry
Belafonte, Itzhak Perlman, Betty Buckley, Jon Lucien, Dianne Reeves,
Andy Statman, Kenny Werner, Gabrielle Roth, Bob Moses, and yes, Tiny
Tim. He co-authored two percussion books, "Afro-Cuban
Rhythms for Drumset" and "Brazilian
Rhythms for Drumset" (Warner Bros. Publications).
Tony Vacca (Balafon, Kalimba, Mbira and percussion) is a musician,
composer and educator. He records and performs with a wide range of
musicians. These include Sting, Baaba Maal, Don Cherry, Yusef Lateef,
Massamba Diop, Foday Musa Suso, Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets, and
Alesandra Belloni. Using balafon, gongs, djembe, dun-dun, and a percussion
unit, Tony creates his signature sound; driving melodic grooves, funky
polyrhythms, and strong, hypnotic solos.
Massamba Diop (Tama) is a master of the tama or talking drum from Senegal,
West Africa. He has worked with Baaba Maal, as the lead tama player
in Baaba's ensemble, Daande Lenol, since its inception over ten years
ago. Massamba has also performed and recorded with Peter Gabriel and
Afro-Celt Sound System of England, Ernest Ranglin and Luciano of Jamaica,
Anita Tarika from Madagascar, and Herbie Hancock and James Brown from
America.
Herman Hampton (Bass) is Assistant Professor in the Ensemble Department
at Berklee College of Music. Herman plays with seasoned musicians and
educators in the African American jazz tradition, including Archie Shepp,
Jay McShann, and Yusef Lateef. Herman is also a freelance musician playing
in the jazz, blues, and Latin traditions.
Doug MacMillan (Guitar) studied at Berklee College of Music and with
Boston guitar guru Mick Goodrick. He has taught and performed throughout
the northeast for the past 20 years.
George Kaye (Bass) studied at the Manhattan School of Music as well
as with bass legends Ron Carter and Dave Holland. He performs or records
with many great musicians, including Clark Terry, Al Grey, Zoot Sims,
Houston Person, Jimmy Giuffre, Eric Kloss, and Joe Lavano.
David Tasgal, (Clarinet) (M.M. Univ of Mass) clarinetist and fiddler
with the Wholesale Klezmer Band, teaches violin and clarinet at the
Brattleboro Music Center. He is the author of the recently published
Family
Violin Method, and has been active as a composer of educational
music for children.
