Why Residencies?
Assemblies are a great way to introduce students to an artform or to entertain, but a residency can provide a much deeper, more meaningful exchange between the artist and the school.
A residency gives the artist a chance to spend quality time guiding a group of students in the art form It is an opportunity to see them through a project rather than just introducing the idea.
Or a residency can allow an artist to visit each classroom for more indepth inquiry into the artform.

To get the most out of a residency, it is essential to include the artist in the planning. Have a preliminary discussion to explore the best way to integrate the particular artist's talents and teaching style into your curriculum. Then include planning time into the residency schedule so that teachers and artist can have clarity in their goals and expectations.

Here are some possible configurations for a residency.
Grade Level:
1. The artist performs an assembly for a certain grade level then visits each class from that grade for several sessions to develop a project.
2. The artist spends a day doing a series of assemblies for the entire school, then meets with the teachers from a specific grade to schedule and plan several sessions with their classes.

Entire School or Multi-grade:
The artist spends a day doing a series of assemblies for the entire school, then meets with school representatives to schedule a series of grade level or classroom visits allowing time for all students or students of several grades to participate in workshops.
